Tomado de Wikipedia.
Luigi Paulino Alfredo Francesco Antonio Balassoni (born 6 July 1924), better known by the stage name Louie Bellson.

The idea for the double bass drum setup came from legendary jazz drummer Louie Bellson when he was still in high school. Originally two tuned bass drums were used for this, but a double pedal on the same drum using an extension mechanism is now more common, due to lower cost and ease of tuning. Although a double pedal will help conserve space, drum resonance is affected by having two beaters playing one drum which is why drummers may opt for the classic two bass drum setup. Some drummers have also experimented with two different bass drum tunings, sometimes combining this with double beaters so as to have more than two pedals. With two feet playing bass drum, many of the techniques of snare drum playing (such as rudiments and rolls) can be performed on the bass drums.

Originally conceived of by jazz drummer Louie Bellson, double bass drumming is a concept used particularly in the Heavy metal genre. It is a technique where the drummer uses two bass drums or a double pedal to play more complicated and/or faster bass drum patterns. Players such as Joey Jordison, Ginger Baker, Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart, Dave Lombardo, George Kollias, Gene Hoglan, Yanic Bercier, Lars Ulrich, Hellhammer, Danny Carey, Vinnie Paul, Nicholas Barker, Virgil Donati, Travis Smith, Keith Moon, Chris Adler, Jason Bittner, Derek Roddy, Raymond Herrera and Pete Sandoval are noted for their double bass drumming.

A simple way to play this would be to start playing 2 and 4 on the snare drum and 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the hi-hat. Then bring in the bass drums playing an 8 beat pattern. A beginner would play Right, Left, Right etc. on the bass drums.
As one grows in ability, different rudimental patterns can be played. Drummers such as Virgil Donati, Dom FamularoThomas Lang have helped to extend double bass drumming into the realm of applying rudiments conventionally played with the hands (double-stroke roll, flam rudiments, etc.). On his instructional DVD
and Creative Control, Thomas Lang refers to this as a "dynamic" approach to the feet, and it opens up new sonic possibilities whilst also providing the drummer with new technical challenges. This opens the possibility of playing rudimental type patterns on the bass drum, just as one would on the snare drum.
