Variable hihat configuration
Someone on the VDRUMS forum had an excellent suggestion - test the hihat with BFD LITE which is included for free with the Trigger IO. I never even installed BFD LITE as I have EZ Drummer and Addictive Drums. However, after doing so I found that it was an excellent
suggestion.
BFF LITE clearly displays the hihat position and MIDI CC# information. Freaking awesome! As best I can tell you need a 25K slider for the full hihat functionality.
Here's what I found:
* XTALK appears to control the OPEN range of the slider but have no effect on the CLOSED range of the slider.
* Low XTALK limits the top end of the slider so you can never reach a CC=0 and thus never be 100% open
* High XTALK causes you to reach CC=0 more quickly, which can be useful if you want to constrict the physical hat travel but still get full CC=0-127 for full open/close range.
* Why the hell can't they just say that in the manual? MADNESS!!!
MOUSER 25K SLIDER:
* I have to manually set the XTALK to 15 to hit CC=0 when the slider is fully open.
* XTALK=14 and I only get CC=4 when the slider is fully open, which is still fully open in BFD LITE, but who knows about other apps
* XTALK=10 and I only get CC=47 when the slider is fully open, or 3/4 open in BFD LITE
* XTALK=20 and I get CC=0 (fully open in BFD LITE) about 5/8 of the way through the slider travel. This could be useful if I want my hats to have a small physical amount of travel but still get the full
open/closed range.
MOUSER 10K SLIDER:
* I simply cannot get a full open with the 10K regardless of XTALK
* XTALK=20 and CC=38 which is 3/4 in BFD
* XTALK=15 and CC=57 which is 1/2 in BFD
* It simply gets worse from there
* It always can hit CC=127 for fully closed, it's the open side of things that are controllable
So my conclusion is I need to use a 25K slider, where I currently have
a 10K slider in my project box.
